Objective: quickly reach high ranking for highly valued search phrases on the primary search engines (google in particular plus yahoo & bing)
On targeting a geographic focus (such as Scottsdale AZ) that produces an ideal return on investment (quick cash flow for small cost):
As I often say to my clients, I want to target "low-hanging fruit," as in goals that require relatively little effort (time, expense) for relatively high rewards. That is why my primary focus is on searches for garage door repair that are geographically centered on "Scottsdale AZ."(Click the prior link to see that it took me only 9 days to reach first page with BING and YAHOO.)
To analyze a few different search terms to identify which would be the best value (the "lowest-hanging fruit"), I began with researching various cities for the search terms of interest to me. (Note that I identified garage door repair as a favorable industry in comparison to several other industry-specific search terms that get over a thousand searches per month locally and attract at least $20 per click on google adwords.)
In this particular industry, I noticed that most of the cities in the east valley cities are rated by google as less competitive than Phoenix and the cities of the west valley. Surprising to me, "garage door repair Scottsdale" was rated the least competitive of all search specifying a particular local city, especially for the longer search phrase "garage door repair Scottsdale AZ." Adding the state abbreviation can make it even easier to get a high ranking (because the "longer-tailed" search phrase is less competitive).
I started this project on February 8th, 2013. As of February 13th, the site has now been ranked for Scottsdale by YAHOO:

Further, since I happen to be physically located in Tempe, I created a google+ listing with my own mailing address. That gives my website some advantage on google for searches in or near Tempe. So, I am targeting Tempe and a few cities very close to it: Scottsdale, Mesa, Gilbert, and (perhaps) Chandler.
Next, here is the initial ranking on YAHOO for Garage Door Repair Tempe AZ at #15 (on February 13, 2013):
Finally, I already have some garage door repair clients who have been focusing on the west valley, so that reduces my interest in the west valley (and you can see what I did for one of them by clicking here: AZ GARAGE DOOR REPAIR). In other words, I want to attract businesses that are extremely interested in customers in the east valley. So, of all of the east valley cities, Scottsdale happened to be the one that google identified for me as being the lowest-hanging fruit (and it was ranked by google as being an easier target than all of the west valley cities anyway).
